Lumberyard Brewing Company

This project was a rehabilitation of the historic J.D. Halstead Lumber Co. building located at the corner of San Francisco St. and Phoenix Ave. smithARCHITECTS teamed with Beaver St. Brewery (BSB) to revitalize this 16,000 s.f historic masonry building to become a new micro-brewery, restaurant, and bar. BSB has maximized their brewing and growth capabilities at their existing facility and this new location would allow them to expand their brewing operation, install a canning line, and distribute beer around the country. One of the primary goals of this rehabilitation effort was to showcase the existing structure and salvage existing building materials for reuse within the new space. This was achieved by incorporating the following methods: existing roof trusses were removed, reconstructed, and re-inserted; existing metal roof panels were removed and utilized as interior wall paneling; existing lumber was salvaged and repurposed to build booths, waiting benches, bar tops, and trim; existing brick masonry was cleaned and re-pointed. As a result of this effort this facility has become a focal point of activity for downtown Flagstaff and will accommodate Lumberyard Brewing Co. for many years to come.

This project was just recently awarded a 2010 Sustainable Building Award for Commercial Building by the Coconino County Sustainable Building Program.
